Chemicals
Marine energy devices, wind energy turbines, and other project components, including the vehicles and vessels that support their development, may contain various chemicals and hazardous fluids such as electrical cable insulating oils, diesel fuel, and lubricating oils. These materials could potentially affect the environment when they are manufactured, used, or disposed of. Ocean deployments often involve antifouling paints or coatings, which slowly leech into the water. The primary concern in the marine environment is how chemicals used might affect marine life, habitats, water quality, and ecosystems processes in the event of a spill or other release such as material degradation. The risk is similar to that of other offshore structures.
