France Energies Marines

France Energies Marines is the French Institute for Energy Transition dedicated to Offshore Renewable Energies (ORE). It's mission is to define, set-up, and apply the scientific and technical environment required to overcome the obstacles related to the development of ORE technologies while optimizing their integration in the environment.

The implementation of research and development (R&D) encompassing set-up, coordination, and scientific leadership for collaborative R&D projects forms the core activity of France Energies Marines. To carry out its R&D program, the Institute benefits from the financial support of the Investments for the Future Programme. France Energies Marines also provides scientific and technical support to the ORE sector in various forms: recommendations, project management assistance, running of tests, provision of expertise and tools for designing machines, offshore access, etc. In addition, the Institute works alongside regional, national, European, and international bodies to promote French R&D and to provide its cross-cutting expert insight to support the development of the sector.

France Energies Marines is founded on a broad public/private partnership which brings together national players in the ORE sector. Supported by the competitiveness clusters Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique and Pôle Mer Méditerranée, the Institute thus gathers over 25 players with a broad variety of profiles: industrial firms, academic and scientific establishments, as well as local authorities.

The consideration of the main issues related to the development of offshore renewable energy and the goals of national players led to the definition of cross-cutting research programs, through which players in this sector are able to share out the risks and costs in order to pick up pace in phases ranging from upstream research to pre-competitive research. The Institute's scientific and technical roadmap is thus divided into four complementary research programs: site characterization, design and monitoring of systems, environmental integration, and farm optimization.
