Fisheries

Commercial fishing is an established industry and a key stakeholder in the marine environment.

Commercial fishing involves the capture of fish and other seafood for profit. Commercial fishing gear can include purse-seine nets, gillnets, trawls, dredges, hooks and lines, or traps. There are many perceived spatial conflicts between the offshore wind and marine renewable energy industries and the fishing industry, as devices may prevent access to the use of certain fishing gear around a project. The fishing industry’s concerns typically increase when proposed projects are in especially high-yield fishing areas.
