Abstract
Africa’s wind sector has crossed an industrial threshold. Installed capacity reached 11.1 GW by the end of 2025, up from just under 9 GW in 2023. A third country, Morocco, has joined South Africa and Egypt above the 2 GW mark. Egypt is building the continent’s first GW-scale wind farm. South Africa’s corporate buyers have signed wind contracts at a faster rate in thirty months than the state procured in 15 years. The question is no longer whether wind belongs on the continent, but how quickly the institutions, grids, and capital flows that turn wind into electricity can keep pace with the technology. The proposed wind projects on the continent are spread across different regions while the built projects cluster around South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia and Kenya. The report identified eight conditions for a successful in-country wind industry as observed by the top African markets.
