Abstract
In order to meet energy requirement through renewables and move away from conventional fossil fuel systems, humanity is pushing development and use of technologies that can work in the marine environment. While advances in technologies for the marine environment have been made, they have not been extensively researched due to availability of advanced terrestrial renewable energy systems. With space on land reducing and being challenged by emergent needs of a rapidly increasing population, achieving sustainability through terrestrial systems alone is becoming difficult. To overcome this challenge and to harness the full potential of ocean-based blue economy, countries are making concerted efforts to revive ocean-based marine renewable energy technologies to generate usable power from ocean energy.
To appreciate the available ocean-based renewable energy technological options to achieve sustainable power while contributing to blue economic growth, this chapter aims to provide a global perspective of the role of marine renewable energy technologies in achieving and sustaining blue economy. To substantiate the argument that economic growth of marine and coastal regions is feasible through use of ocean-based renewable energy while contributing to blue economic growth, India is discussed as a use case.
