The Citadel Hill Laboratory
The Citadel Hill Laboratory was the first dedicated marine biological station in Great Britain and among the first in Europe. Over the years the Laboratory on the Hoe has been the site of key scientific breakthroughs and today remains at the forefront of marine science. It is the home of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom (MBA) and the Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science (SAHFOS). The MBA is a learned society with over 1,400 members worldwide. It undertakes marine biological research at its Citadel Hill laboratory and focuses on promoting marine science as an important tool for environmental protection and management, provide access to unique historical material, circulate data, and undertake outreach and education projects. The Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science (SAHFOS) is an internationally funded research organisation that operates the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey. SAHFOS plankton research helps to address pressing global issues; educate; influence and shape fishing and environmental policy and combat human health challenges.
