Abstract
South Fork Wind Farm , which is ~19 miles southeast of Block Island and 35 miles east of Montauk Point, was constructed between 2022 and 2024, including the installation of 12 wind turbine generators (WTGs), submarine cables, cable protection systems, and an offshore substation. Prior to construction, boulders were relocated during seafloor preparation.
South Fork Wind’s comprehensive benthic monitoring program aims to assess the following expected changes (hypotheses) associated with the project:
- Epifauna will grow on introduced structures.
- Structure-associated taxa will enrich the surrounding habitat, which will result in accumulation of finer sediments and organic matter.
- Any disruption to the function of infaunal communities by cable installation will be temporary.
- Boulder relocation will result in limited effects on the organisms that live on rocks and boulders.
