Advancing knowledge of non-breeding seabirds, in the context of offshore wind impact assessments

Abstract

This report presents a detailed assessment of non-breeding birds (immatures, sabbaticals and failed breeders) in seabird populations within the context of offshore wind farms.

This work has been undertaken on behalf of the Offshore Wind Strategic Monitoring and Research Forum (OWSMRF) Phase III. OWSMRF is an industry-led collaborative partnership, which aims to identify and develop research to fill critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of the impact of offshore wind development on marine bird populations.

The main report is accompanied by an appendix, describing research ideas to better understand seabirds’ behavioural responses to artificial light, in both immatures and adult breeding birds.

The intention is that these resources provide a signpost towards research that can contribute to reducing uncertainty in offshore windfarm impact assessments for seabirds.
