Harnessing Ocean Renewable Energy for India's Blue Economy: Opportunities, Challenges, and Policy Perspectives

Abstract

Oceans offer vast and largely untapped renewable energy potential, positioning marine energy as a key driver of India's emerging Blue Economy. Despite India's long coastline and estimated tidal and wave energy capacities, the development of ocean renewable energy remains limited. Initiatives like the Deep Ocean Mission and Sagarmala Project highlight India's commitment to aligning ocean energy development with climate goals under the Paris Agreement and its updated NDC targets. This study explores the potential of marine energy in reducing carbon emissions, promoting coastal development, and supporting sustainable economic growth. It also identifies technological, policy, and financial challenges impeding progress. Emphasizing a holistic approach, the study advocates for enhanced policy frameworks, innovation, and international collaboration to harness ocean energy for long-term sustainability and inclusive development.
