Instituto Superior Técnico

Founded in 1911 as an autonomous school, IST emerged from the split of the Lisbon Commercial and Industrial Institute into two schools, with Alfredo Bensaúde serving as its first director from 1911 to 1920. In 1930, it became part of the Technical University of Lisbon, which later merged into the University of Lisbon. IST has since grown to become the largest engineering school in Portugal by student enrollment, faculty size, scientific output, and patents.
