CNR ISMAR-Istituto di Scienze Marine

The new ISMAR has its headquarters in Venice and is divided into five territorial offices: Trieste, Bologna, Lerici, Rome and Naples

Its mission, as described in the articles of association, is divided into six lines of research:

  1. Physical and biogeochemical oceanography for the study of processes and climatic variability, from the open sea to the transition areas;
  2. Observation and operational services for monitoring physical, chemical and biological ocean variables and for risk assessment;
  3. Geological evolution of the oceans, continental margins and transition areas for the assessment of potential resources and the assessment of geological risks;
  4. Stratigraphy, paleoceanography and study of the mechanisms of change in the climate regime;
  5. Ecological research for the study of the structure, functioning and evolution of ecosystems;
  6. Interoperable management of marine data for maritime spatial planning and the development of an ecosystem-based marine economy.
  7. Scientific Dissemination and Ocean Literacy
