Description

To simulate, using the hybrid coordinate ocean model, the effects of (parameterized) ocean-current turbines in the Straits of Florida on the Gulf Stream.

Funding Source

State of Florida

Location of Research

Tallahassee & Boca Raton (computer modeling and analysis)

Project Aims

Explore relationships between Marine Renewable Energy Extraction & Gulf Stream Dynamics.

Study Progress

This research is complete.

Key Findings

Modest deployments are unlikely to have measurable effects; a full “wall” of systems has the potential to divert the main flow altogether. Effective power extraction not specifically calculated.
