Bundesamt für Naturschutz (BfN)

he Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) is a higher federal authority with technical, scientific, and administrative responsibilities in the areas of nature conservation and landscape management. We enforce nature conservation law, advise policymakers, provide research findings and data on nature and landscapes, and promote and support nature conservation projects and research initiatives. Our responsibilities are defined by the Act Establishing a Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfNG).

The BfN is one of four agencies within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN). Around 430 employees in Bonn, Leipzig, and on the island of Vilm near Rügen work in various fields to protect biodiversity and ensure the sustainable use of our resources. Sabine Riewenherm has served as President of the Agency since September 1, 2021. On these pages, we introduce you to our agency.
