Reaching our climate targets requires deploying wind turbines in European seas. Denmark has the longest experience: the world’s first offshore wind farm was built there in 1991. Today, Denmark has 2.7 GW of offshore wind energy (approx. 715 turbines) The ambitions: 14 GW by 2030 and 52 GW by 2050. Due to the shallow depth of the North and Baltic Seas, turbines are bottom-fixed, a commercially used technology with better known impacts. To reach our nature targets and conserve the ecosystem services we depend upon, it is imperative to protect marine nature. Strong regulations for both offshore wind and nature are necessary to support these goals.
