In the United States, acoustical modeling of wind energy projects historically has relied on sound power levels determined in accordance with International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61400-11 and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9613-2 propagation modeling methodology. While current modeling practices in the United States yield relatively minor differences in sound levels, standardization of predictions will create a robust and repeatable process that bolsters regulatory confidence in the results. American Clean Power (ACP) is recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an Accredited Standards Developer. In 2021, the ACP Standards working group reached consensus on a new methodology for predicting sound power levels. This methodology has been drafted into a new ANSI/ACP standard that has demonstrated consensus, complies with ANSI’s essential requirements, and will be issued as a formal standard in the spring of 2022.
