MASTS is pleased to host an online webinar with Sharad Bayyana, a PhD Student from the University of Queensland, Australia. Sharad will present "Climate exposure of marine protected areas in the Indian Ocean".
The Indian Ocean is experiencing the fastest rate of ocean warming of any oceans, along with expansion of oxygen minimum zones and ocean acidification. As species are expected to move and track their optimal climate niche with changing climatic conditions, this raises an important question about the viability of current conservation plans and marine protected areas. We estimate the climate exposure of regions of high biodiversity and protected areas in the Indian Ocean region. We have quantified multiple climate hazard metrics of projected changes in climate, at a relatively fine spatial scale, thus providing estimates of climate projections at a scale relevant to regional management and sustainable conservation policies.
After the presentation there will be a live Q&A.
