MASTS Webinar: Fishing Vessel Based Ocean Observing: A Scalable and Cost-Efficient Shelf Complement to Argo

MASTS is pleased to hosted a webinar with Cooper Van Vranken from the Fishing Vessel Ocean Observing Network and founder of Ocean Data Network.

Fishing Vessel Based Ocean Observing: A Scalable and Cost-Efficient Shelf Complement to Argo

A new temperature profiling network based upon instrumentation mounted on fishing gears was initiated earlier in 2026, and is now one of the largest subsurface observation networks in the greater Scotland region. The presentation will focus on progress and opportunities of this collaborative approach to ocean observation regionally as well as globally including: data quality and delivery, complementarity with established observation networks, win-wins for industry, modeling impacts and more.

The Fishing Vessel Ocean Observing Network (FVON) is an initiative aimed at enhancing ocean observation through collaborative efforts between fishing vessels and scientific organizations.

This webinar will be chaired by Dr Bee Berx from Scottish Government's Marine Directorate. Bee is also the co-convenor of the MASTS Marine Climate Change research forum.
