Accurate and detailed wave resource characterization at a nationwide level is challenging because of the need to balance large spatial coverage (EEZ) and the high-resolution wave data downscaled to project sites. This webinar provides an overview of a joint effort by US DOE's three national labs to characterize wave resource in all US coastal regions based on long-term, high-resolution wave hindcast data. Topics covered include the modelling approach, model validation strategies, resource characterization based on IEC standards, and data dissemination strategies. Examples of model development, validation and resource characterization for selected regions are provided, along with data sharing/dissemination and effect of decadal climate variability on the wave energy resource. Lessons learned and technical challenges of the long-term, high-resolution wave hindcasts at regional and nearshore scales will be discussed.
