AB - The survival of fish passing dams remains one of the most important environmental issues for hydroelectric power production. Fish are exposed to many stresses during dam passage that are not encountered in natural, unimpounded rivers. These include rapid and extreme water pressure changes in turbine systems and excessive levels of dissolved gas due to water being spilled, both of which may cause mortality to fish.
