Aesthetics

Visual appeal of existing landscape or seascape.

Aesthetics

The addition of renewable energy devices can drastically change the landscape or seascape. Some people appreciate the devices and use them to attract tourists, while others dislike the new addition as an imposition on the natural environment. Many stakeholders that support renewable energy projects in general are opposed to a proposed project due to the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) idea. These people believe that development of renewables will help society, but are unwilling for a project to occur close to them and impact their experience. Wind energy may have more impact on aesthetics due to proximity to people and the height of turbines, which increases visibility even at great distances. Many marine renewable energy projects are lcoated far offshore, have a low profile to the surface, or are completely underwater - all of which reduce visibility and perceived impact on aesthetics.
