Animals can be drawn to devices for increased food, curiosity, or new habitat.

Attraction

Animals may be attracted to wind and marine renewable energy devices, which may increase the risk of various stressors. Attraction can be caused by an increased presence of food, curiosity, or the introduction of new habitat. As examples: bugs may be attracted to lighting at night and attract bats to wind turbines; adolescent whales may be curious to explore a new device in the water; and seabirds may utilize floating structures for roosting. The consequence of this interaction could vary greatly based on the technology. Attraction to wind and tidal turbines may increase risk of collision or noise exposure, while the creation of new habitats may also benefit populations and species diversity.
