OES Environmental & ORJIP Workshop
Retiring Risks of MRE Environmental Interactions to Support Consenting/Permitting
European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference 2019 (EWTEC 2019)
Centro Congressi della Stazione Marittima di Napoli (Ulisse Room - 2nd Floor)
September 5, 2019
14:30 - 17:30 CEST / 12:30 - 15:30 UTC / 5:30 - 8:30 PDT
OES-Environmental (formerly Annex IV) and ORJIP invite you to join a workshop on Thursday September 5th 14:30 to 17:30 CEST on retiring risks of effects on marine animals from electromagnetic fields (EMF) and underwater noise from marine energy devices. The workshop (Retiring risks of MRE environmental interactions to support consenting/permitting) will be held in Naples, Italy, at the Centro Congressi della Stazione Marittima di Napoli, following EWTEC. The purpose of the workshop is to examine pathways for determining data needs, monitoring requirements, and possible mitigation measures for working towards retiring risks of EMF and underwater noise for consenting small installations of tidal turbines and wave energy converters.
The output of the workshop will contribute to the 2020 OES-Environmental State of the Science report, and to ORJIP position papers on requirements for consenting tidal and wave devices.
You can register for the workshop by sending an email to ORJIP (ORJIP@aquatera.co.uk) by August 2nd. Once you are registered, you will receive materials at least two weeks prior to the workshop.
We hope to see you in Naples!

Since the workshop will only last three hours, we would like you to come prepared for it. We have put together some documents for you to read, accessible from this webpage:
- Please start with the slide deck (“EWTEC Workshop Slidedeck”), it explains the process of the risk retirement pathway, as well as presents studies related to the underwater noise and electromagnetic field (EMF) stressors.
- You will also find two tables providing information about the monitoring and research studies highlighted in the slide deck as well as additional relevant studies (“Noise Literature Table” and “EMF Literature Table”). Each study (row) comes with a link to the full article / report (“Document Link”) and another link to a shorter condensed document on Tethys (“Tethys Metadata Link”). Please take the time to review the documents following either one of the links to familiarize yourself with each study.
- Two PDF files summarizing the underwater noise thresholds used by U.S. regulators (“NOAA-NMFS Marine Mammals Hearing Thresholds (2018)” and “BOEM Fish Hearing Thresholds (2013)”).
- Links to the April and May OES-Environmental webinars on Data Transferability (“Data Transferability Regulatory Workshop Slides”) and Risk Retirement (“Risk Retirement Regulator Workshop Slides”).
During the workshop, we will start with an introduction to the risk retirement pathway and a presentation of the current knowledge on underwater noise and EMF related to MRE converters. We will then divide into two groups to address each stressor separately.
